Q: What is the proper mixing procedure for powder developer and what factors can cause undiluted powder sediment in the bottom of the mixer?

To properly mix powder developer, it is important to add the correct amount of water to the mixer, turn on the mixer, and then add the powder. If you have undiluted powder sediment in the bottom of your mixer, it can be due to water softness or minerals in the water.

  • Using a Sofchek test strip, check for water softness every time you make developer.

However, the Sofchek test strip will not indicate minerals present in the water; if you are still getting undiluted powder sediment in the bottom of the mixer after ensuring correct water softness, have your local Water Purification company analyze your water to determine and remove minerals from the water.
